What are the different types of dentures?

Depending on your needs, there are several options available to restore your smile:

Partial dentures: If you still have some of your natural teeth, a partial denture can fill in the gaps from missing teeth. These are often held in place by discreet clips that attach to your existing teeth, preventing them from shifting.

Complete (Full) dentures: These are used when all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw are missing. They are custom-fitted to sit comfortably against your gums.

Implant-retained dentures: For those looking for maximum stability, dentures can be anchored to dental implants. This prevents the denture from slipping or clicking while you eat or talk, providing a feeling very close to natural teeth.

Flexible dentures: Made from a modern, more pliable material, these are often more comfortable for patients as they can flex and grip around the natural contours of your mouth.

Why choose modern dentures?

The false teeth of the past are a far cry from the dentures we can provide today. Today’s dentures offer:

  • Natural aesthetics: We use high-quality acrylics and ceramics that mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural tooth enamel and healthy gum tissue.
  • Improved speech: Missing teeth can cause a lisp or whistling sound. A well-fitted denture provides the support your tongue needs for clear speech.
  • Better nutrition: Regain the ability to enjoy a varied diet, including crunchy vegetables and proteins that might have been difficult to chew before.
  • Facial support: Dentures support the muscles in your cheeks and lips, preventing the sunken appearance that often follows tooth loss.

Caring for your dentures

To keep your smile bright and your mouth healthy, we recommend the following:

  • Cleaning daily: Brush your dentures with a soft brush and non-abrasive cleaner (avoid standard toothpaste, which can be too gritty).
  • Give your gums a rest: It is usually recommended to remove your dentures at night to allow your gums to recover.
  • Stay hydrated: Store your dentures in water or a dedicated soaking solution overnight so they don’t lose their shape.

Useful suggestions to adapt to your new dentures

Eating – Eating will take a little practice. Start with soft foods, and foods cut into small pieces will help. Chew slowly using both sides of your mouth at the same time to prevent dentures from tipping. Once you become accustomed to chewing, include other foods until you return to your normal diet.

Increased salivary flow – You may experience an increase in salivary flow when the dentures are first inserted. This is a natural response of the salivary glands that will return to normal after a few weeks. You can improve the situation by swallowing more often.

Speech – New dentures may alter your speech initially. Pronouncing certain words may require practice. Reading out loud and repeating troublesome words will speed up the adaptation process. This problem rarely persists beyond two weeks.

Sore spots – Minor irritation caused by surface irregularities or pressure spots on the denture-bearing areas is quite common. Your dentist will relieve the discomfort by adjusting the denture surface. Stop wearing the denture if the irritation is very painful. Consult us immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

A denture is a removable prosthesis used to replace missing teeth. Commonly referred to as ‘false teeth’, a denture is usually made of acrylic or a combination of acrylic and metal. A partial denture is fitted to replace some missing teeth, whilst a complete denture is indicated when all natural teeth are missing. A good set of dentures helps you to eat, speak, and function, and often improves a person’s appearance.

Depending on the complexity of each case, the duration of the treatment will vary. After the initial visit of examination and diagnosis, the subsequent visits will include taking impressions of the mouth, bite registration, try-in of the denture, fitting, and review.

New dentures always feel strange when first placed in your mouth. Several days or weeks will be required before you get accustomed to them. Adaptation varies with different persons, and time and experience are essential before dentures can be worn comfortably and function effectively.

You should wear your dentures for around 8 hours a day at least. This gives your jawbone and gums time to get used to the dentures and prevents sore spots from developing. It is preferable to take them out at night to give your gums a chance to rest.

It’s best to avoid hard & chewy foods, as well as sticky or spicy foods and alcohol, while your mouth is sore or healing. To get used to the feeling of dentures, you should try not to rush eating so you can focus on the eating process and take small bites or cut up your food into bite-sized pieces, so less chewing is required.
