What is gum & periodontal care?

While routine hygiene appointments focus on preventive cleaning and stain removal, dedicated gum disease care (also known as periodontal therapy) is designed to treat and manage inflammation or infection within the deeper supporting structures of your teeth, including your gums and underlying bone.

Gum health exists on a spectrum, including the following:-

Gingivitis: An early, mild form of gum inflammation where gums may appear slightly red, swollen, or bleed when brushed. With targeted care and gentle treatment, gingivitis can be completely reversed.

Periodontitis: If inflammation reaches beneath the gumline, deeper “pockets” can form around the teeth. While periodontitis requires ongoing management, structured non-surgical periodontal care can successfully stabilise the condition, halt progress, and protect your natural smile for the long term.

How periodontal care protects your smile

Seeking targeted gum disease treatment in Chiswick offers many benefits beyond keeping your teeth clean:

  • Restores comfort: Eliminates gum tenderness, swelling, and bleeding while brushing or chewing.
  • Protects natural teeth: Strengthens the foundations holding your teeth in place, helping you keep your natural smile secure.
  • Freshens breath: Targets plaque buildup and hidden bacteria in deeper gum pockets that regular toothbrushing cannot reach.
  • Boosts overall wellbeing: Healthy gums play a key supporting role in your general health and wellness.

What to expect: Your treatment journey

Getting gum care at our Chiswick practice typically involves four stages:

  1. Initial consultation & gum assessment: We gently check your gum health, take detailed measurements (pocket charting), and take digital X-rays, when required, to assess the underlying support.
  2. Personalised treatment plan: We clearly explain our findings, discuss tailored treatment options, and outline a supportive care plan designed for your comfort and lifestyle.
  3. Treatment: Hygiene and cleaning appointments are carried out depending on what level of cleaning is required.
  4. Ongoing care: We review your progress and create a simple, manageable routine to keep your smile healthy.

Caring for your gums at home

Keep in mind that healthy gums DON’T BLEED. You are the key player on the hygiene team. If you don’t do the essential daily brushing and flossing, the rest of your dental team (the dentist and hygienist) is playing short-handed. And sometimes, with everyone fighting the good fight, stubborn plaque and bacteria will require some new maintenance techniques for battling gum infection.

In-clinic treatment works hand-in-hand with daily home care. To maintain the results of your gum disease treatment in Chiswick:

  • Use interdental cleaning tools: Clean between your teeth daily using interdental brushes or floss to keep bacteria away from the gumline.
  • Ensure a gentle technique: Use a soft-bristled or electric toothbrush angled gently towards the gumline. Don’t brush forcefully as this can damage the enamel or gums.
  • Maintain regular check-ups: Visit our dentists in Chiswick regularly so we can keep an eye on your progress and overall oral health.

Frequently Asked Questions

The frequency of your visits depends on the current health of your gums and your personal risk factors. We can assess this at your hygiene appointment. If your gums are healthy or you are maintaining good stability, a check-up and hygiene appointment every 6 to 12 months is usually recommended to keep plaque and tartar under control.

If you are undergoing active treatment or managing deeper gum infection, we typically recommend visits every 3 to 4 months. These regular reviews allow us to monitor pocket depths, gently clear away deep bacteria, and ensure your gums stay stable and healthy.

Periodontal disease is the Number One cause of tooth loss amongst adults. This is because a certain number of people (15-20%) have immune systems that overreact to the bad bacteria in their mouths. When this overreaction occurs, the immune system attacks and breaks down the bone and tissue that surround the tooth. This destruction is not predictable and can occur sporadically. None of us knows if we are part of this 15-20% because we can’t usually feel or notice the onset of gum and bone (periodontal) disease. Both adults and children should be routinely checked for gum disease.

Taking care of your gums does more than protect your smile; it supports your whole-body health. Factors like smoking, stress, and skipping regular dental visits can weaken your immune system and make your gums more vulnerable to infection and slow down healing. Because the bacteria and inflammation from gum disease can travel through your bloodstream, keeping your gums healthy helps protect you against wider health concerns, including heart disease, stroke, and blood sugar complications if you have diabetes. Healthy gums also support a safer pregnancy, reducing risks linked to early labour. Partnering with your dental team ensures your mouth stays healthy, keeping your entire body protected and feeling its best.
